Preparing for the Microsoft Migration
What do I have to do?
- Your school/site will be notified by email before the migration with migration dates and support information
-Tech Facilitators and Tech Managers will receive document for distribution to staff
- Start your computer and log into Novell prompt
- Follow the on-screen prompts
- Sign in to the computer when prompted
- DO NOT INTERRUPT THE PROCESS or you may risk data loss
- Call the main office or designated technology facilitator/manager if any of the migration steps fail. Give them your name, room number, machine info (GX 270, GX 760) and on screen error.
What you will see during the update?
- Pop-up windows (script notifications) will come and go while the updates occur and the computer will shut down automatically
- DO NOT INTERRUPT THE PROCESS or you may risk data loss
- Login in when prompted using your current username and password
- If you receive an error message, please contact the main office and they will contact the lead technician on site immediately
How long will this take?
- This will depend upon how much individual info is on your machine, programs installed and computer memory of the workstation (approx 1 hour to 3 hours)
- After the first restart, you will need to be available assist the migration process.
-Login following each update and after each consecutive reboot.

This meeting is scheduled the day before your site is to be migrated. Choose a time that works best for your staff.
The Instructional Technology Department staff will provide a half-hour (1/2 hr) basic training session at each school or site the day prior to the scheduled migration date. The new login processes for network and e-mail access will be covered in the training. This training is mandatory for all staff at each location. Please check with your principal or building secretary to learn the time of your training.

The pre migration meetings are designed to provide an overview of the migration process, assist staff in locating training resources, user guides, tips & tricks and FAQ's , and supporting user in preparing their workstations and laptops for the migration process.

Pre Migration Steps
Please follow these procedures in order to prepare your computer for migration. We ask that you begin these steps at least 2 week before your site is to be migrated. Thank you!

Other prep steps
- Backup all pertinent information to other storage devices (i.e. – CDs, flash drives or other media). To view how to back up your data view the USB and CD storage back up document links below or consult your on-site tech person if you have questions.

- Run all district pushed windows updates. (If you have updates waiting to be installed, there will be a yellow shield on the bottom right corner of your screen.)
- Update virus definitions and run a virus scan.
- Install Microsoft Office 2007. To do this, click on the Start button, then select Run. When the menu pops up on your screen, type aps2007 into the box and press OK.
- Check the Internet Explorer version you have installed on your computer. For the migration to run properly, you must have Internet Explorer 7 running. Internet Explorer 8 will fail!
- Clean out your GroupWise email. Calendar items will transfer from your GroupWise account to the new Microsoft Outlook account. Once you have changed over to Outlook, you will not be able to view calendar updates from other sites that have not been migrated yet.

FAQ's -- New!!!!
Q. After completing the migration, when I print the print job does not go to my old printer?
A. Your default printer must be re-selected. Click the Start Button>drag to Settings and Select Printers and Faxes - Right click on the printer of your choice and Select "Set as Default Printer". Note: You may need to close the program you were in and reopen it for the default printer to be recognized
Q. Following the migration I login and cannot locate SiteData and other shared folders and files in my G: drive.
A. Files that were formerly located on the G: drive (i.e SiteData, Shared By All Staff , Admin Confidential) are now located on the V: drive
Q. I have community and /or lab computers that need to migrated, how should I login to migrate these community or lab computers?
A. Use the two digit login created for your school/site. it will provide you login access to both the Novell and Microsoft Networking environments.
