APS is Moving from Novell Groupwise to Microsoft Outlook

To meet growing business and educational needs, APS will continue to enhance our technology and embark on a complete migration/transition to a new server and e-mail system beginning in the fall.  This project will replace the current Novell servers with Microsoft servers and centralize all servers in the Information Technology data center. A new e-mail system, Microsoft Outlook, will replace GroupWise. A wide range of training options will be available to help users learn the basics of the new e-mail and calendar applications. Microsoft Migration Status

All APS schools and administrative sites have been successfully migrated.

Feb. 18, 2011 Update

Microsoft Migration Complete for APS Staff

The first phase of the migration project is complete. APS staff at all schools and administrative sites are now using Microsoft Outlook 2007 email, calendars, tasks and contacts.

The first phase was a districtwide effort, and many staff members deserve thanks and recognition:

  • APS principals for their communication efforts to ready their schools and staff
  • Site-based technology facilitators and managers for their preparation, migration day efforts and willingness to help other sites
  • Dept. of Instructional Technology team (DoIT) for their readiness workshops
  •  Information Technology staff for their long hours, migration day efforts and behind the scenes work to enable the migration to occur

The migration project is the first step to improving the APS computing environment to meet continuing district needs. The second phase will complete the migration to Microsoft Active Directory and change the login screen from Novell. Future benefits include single user name to log in, easier wireless network access, role-based security, and quicker turnaround on service issues.

APS will continue to offer Microsoft Outlook 2007 training classes through April. To learn more about classes and view the training schedule, visit http://microsoft-migration.aurorak12.org/training/. Feedback from Outlook class participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with 96 percent of respondents agreeing that it will contribute to their professional performance.
